Sust Ed 2015–16: A year in review

Sustainability Education had a great 2015–16 academic year. We are excited to carry that momentum into next year, form new partnerships and continue building connections across campus. Here’s a look back at some of the awesome events of this past year.

Sustainability Action

Students participate in group activities at the SustAction! event

Sustainability Education and University Services co-hosted the 2015 “Sustainability Action,” a Welcome Week event for incoming students geared at introducing them to sustainability’s role in academic programs, student groups and University operations on campus.


AASHE group photoThe city of Minneapolis welcomed students, staff and faculty from around the world who are passionate about transforming sustainability education to the AASHE conference in October 2015. A number of students and staff from the University of Minnesota were fortunate to attend and present to attendees from across the United States and 17 other countries.

Sustainability Fair

Undergraduate students enrolled in the Sustainable Communities (SUST 4004) course presented their semester-long sustainability related projects at the 4th annual Silverwood Park Sustainability Fair. Projects focused on housing development and bike infrastructure, amongst other topics.

Sustainability Education put on the first annual SustTunes, an event that brought together musicians, student groups, external organizations and community members interested in sustainability and well-being. Around 175 people gathered in the solstice-approaching darkness for an event that marked the first of its kind.

The 2016 SELF-Sustain conference convened student leaders and faculty from around the state who are interested in advancing sustainability initiatives on their campus at the University of Minnesota Morris. Fascinating highlights included seeing the inside of a wind turbine, solar energy conversion and the biomass gasification plant.

Sustainability Symposium

The 2016 Sustainability Symposium showcased 30 research and creative projects from students across the University of Minnesota campuses. Students presented posters, lightning talks and creative work all aimed at tackling the complex challenges in sustainability.

Undergraduate Leaders Program

The 2016 Undergraduate Leaders Program brought together 15 undergraduate students to use the lenses of equity, reciprocity, justice and diversity to define and think about sustainability. With these themes in mind, students applied for and received an IonE Mini Grant to carry out their idea of “Reshaping the American Dream” through tiny houses.

Sustainability Film Series

Sustainability Education, University Dining Services, the University Services Sustainability Office and the Bell Museum of Natural History came together to put on the 6th annual Sustainability Film Series. This year featured the films Just Eat It, We Are All Related Here, This Changes Everything, and Plastic Paradise which were paired with engaging panels and student groups to encourage attendees to deepen their understanding of sustainability.
