Co-hosted with the Food and Bioproducts Engineering Organization FaBEO, the UMTC Office of Sustainability, the UMC Center for Sustainability, UMD Office of Sustainability and the UMM Office of Sustainability

The Sustainability Symposium (previously the Sustainability & Energy Expo) brings together diverse sustainability projects, artwork, research, and other ideas at one platform. This year’s Symposium will also celebrate and honor this year’s Student Impact Awardees.

The Sustainability Symposium will be held at the Institute on the Environment on the University of Minnesota, Saint Paul campus from 12:00 – 5:30 pm on Friday, April 14, 2023. All University students (undergraduate, graduate and professional), faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend.

Presentation sites will be held at Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, and Morris. Folks from Rochester are welcome to participate virtually as well as in-person at the Twin Cities campus. Those out of town or needing accommodation are also welcome to participate online. Opening remarks, panel presentation and awards presentations will occur on campus and shared via Zoom.

What is the Sustainability Symposium?

In 2011, the Sustainability Symposium arose from a recognition that pressing environmental issues, such as climate change and environmental injustice require the collective expertise of diverse disciplines. At a large institution like the University of Minnesota, connecting across the campus can be a real challenge. Now, more than ever, we need to bridge the gap and collaborate with each other across academic, social, and cultural backgrounds, to confront some of the biggest challenges humanity has ever faced.

At the Sustainability Symposium, we aim to bridge the gap in our understanding of what constitutes sustainability knowledge and action. We aim to bring together students, community leaders, practitioners, and scholars to communicate, share and collaborate over ideas needed to address the most pressing problems of today. These problems include environmental injustice towards minoritized communities across race, economics, and gender, food scarcity, diminishing biodiversity, and climate change. While applicants are encouraged to engage with the theme, all proposals related to sustainability are welcome.
